Campus update on Peck Hall incident

To the campus community,

MTSU Police Chief Edwin Kaup and Larry Flowers, spokesman for Murfreesboro Police and Fire Rescue departments, said officers responded this morning to the discovery of an apparent fatality in Peck Hall. Life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and it was later determined that the victim took his own life. The victim was contract worker and not a student or university staff member. The identity of the victim is pending notification of family. Police determined the victim entered Peck around 3 a.m. and was alone in the building until the deceased was discovered around 7:20 a.m. While there is no threat to the campus, Peck Hall will remain closed today (Wednesday) with classes canceled and offices closed. Activities will resume as scheduled on Thursday. Per Tennessee law, Murfreesboro Police is the lead investigator on unattended deaths and will issue updates as they deem appropriate.

Today’s incident underscores the importance of signing up for our campus alert system, https://www.mtsu.edu/alert4u/index.php The university’s thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and coworkers of the victim.

Sincerely,
Sidney A. McPhee
